A scheme proposed by London Mayor Boris Johnson to build an airport in the Thames Estuary, dismissed by many as bonkers, has received tentative support from Prime Minister David Cameron who will announce a public consultation in March.
The scheme, which has already received the backing of the world renowned architect and man behind Stansted Airport Norman Foster, would involve building a new airport on a man-made island in the Thames Estuary.
Cameron had planned to announce preliminary backing for the scheme earlier this month, according to the Daily Telegraph, with feasibility studies beginning in the spring. However, the announcement was blocked by his deputy Nick Clegg amid concerns that it had not been thought through, said the paper.
The Telegraph quoted a senior Liberal Democrat source saying the consultation would almost certainly be announced in March.
